Major Achievements of the Department: Research Work / Organizing Seminars / Workshops, etc.
Along with their classroom teaching, faculty members of the Department always engage themselves in research activities and also involve students of the department in various other academic activities:
- Research work:All the faculty members continued with theirs research work along with classroom teaching after joining the Department. Four out of the five faculty members have already received their PhD degree from North Eastern Hill University, Shillong; latest being Dr. James Wahlang who received his Ph.D. degree in 2007. The fifth faculty member, Miss Piyali Bhattacharjee, is almost on the verge of submitting her PhD thesis to North Eastern Hill University.
- Seminars/ popular lectures etc: The Biochemistry Department is one of the six science departments in the college selected under Star College Scheme by Department of Biotechnology, Govt. of India. Various academic activities are being organized by the members of the department from the funds provided by the Department of Biotechnology, Govt. of India. In 2009, the following activities have been organized till date.
- A Guest lecture on "Structural Organisation of proteins and their targeting to various destinations", by Prof. Ramesh Sharma, department of Biochemistry, NEHU, Shillong, held on 8th August, 2009.
- Third year honours students were taken to NEHU on 6th August, 2009 to attend 19th NEHU Extension Lecture on "The Science of Healthy aging from molecules to hormesis" by Dr Suresh Rattan, PhD, DSc, Department of Molecular Biology, Aarhus University, Denmark.
- A students' Seminar titled "Advancing Scholars", has been organized on the 23rd of September, 2009, by the Department. In this seminar, students from the Biochemistry department of different colleges under NEHU participated. The students gave oral presentations with the help of audio-visual aids. Every presentation was followed by a short interactive question answer session. The presentations were also judged by a panel of judges and prizes were awarded to the best three presenters. All the participants were given participation certificates.
- Departmental Newsletter: Staff and students of the Department are engaged in bringing out the Departmental newsletter "Ingene" by the end of this academic session. Students are encouraged to write popular scientific articles and compile all the activities of the Department for the entire academic session.

- Seminar on "Emotional Quotient (EQ)" by Bro. Conrad D'Souza on February 2007 as part of the Faculty development programme.
- A programme conducted by Br. S. G. Alvarez, Provincial Leader of Christian Brothers in India, on the 8th of June 2007.
- A programme on "Conflict Resolutions" conducted by Brother Conrad D'Souza, on 15th and 16th of February 2008.
- Seminar on "Student teacher relationship, Behavioral Pattern, Counseling and Career Guidance", Part I organized by the College, Bro. K. Ward. 13th & 14th August 2008.
- Seminar on "Student teacher relationship, Behavioral Pattern, Counseling and Career Guidance", Part II organized by the College, Bro. K. Ward on 28th & 29th May 2009.
Past Students' Profile (Placement of Students
A good number of students have gone for higher studies after graduation, completed P.G courses in Biochemistry/Biotech/Life Sciences/Bioinformatics from various Universities. Some of them have joined as faculty in various colleges in Meghalaya and other states of India. Many have joined as research scholars in various Universities such as JNU, NEHU, Hyderabad University, Amity University, Bose Institute, ISI, Delhi University, IICB etc. and research institutes of national importance such as the CSIR labs. A few have joined service in other organizations/companies such as Reliance Life sciences, Google Life Sciences, related to their field of study. A few students have also joined foreign universities for their PG courses. Some students are also pursuing MBA courses at different institutes of India. The department looks forward to further developments in teaching-learning process and infrastructure developments.
