The Department of English at St. Edmund’s College is one of the oldest Departments in the college. Eminent scholars and thinkers over the years have made seminal contributions to moulding and promoting the Department’s objectives of language teaching and the teaching of literary appreciation and research. Besides being the largest department in the Stream of Arts, it is also responsible for imparting instruction to various Streams such as Commerce, Science, Social Work, and Environmental Science where English is a compulsory subject.
Apart from being among the first few Departments to have offered Honours courses, the Department also offers programmes such as Alternative English and Elective English at the different levels of the Under-Graduate Programme.
The Faculty of the Department is well qualified and successfully handles about 2500 College students. The Department offers a lively and diverse range of lectures, seminars, presentations and discussion groups to enhance the skills of the learners.
The Department and the staff are committed to set standards of excellence in the College and are striving hard towards achieving the goal and vision with which this College has been set up.

Apart from the conventional classroom teaching, the Department is also engaged in a number of innovative and challenging courses in English studies and its association with inter-disciplinary intellectual activities with various Faculties. There are lectures by visiting speakers, and regular internal seminars by students.
This year, the Department has been able to avail funds from the UGC to run its Career Oriented Certificate Course in Communication Skills. This is a short term course of 6 months duration. The aim of such a course is to help the students develop communicative skills that will come in handy in their later years. Faculty members from the department as well as resource persons from relevant fields have rendered their services towards the conduct of this project.
The Department also publishes a yearly magazine, Musings regularly. This project is handled entirely by the Honours students under the guidance of the faculty members.
The following is an outline of the various programmes and projects that the Department has been engaged in and responsible for in the recent years:
* UGC sponsored Career Oriented Certificate Course in Communication Skills- July 2010 to Dec 2010. About 25 students were given certificates on their completion of the course.
* A One day Inter College Students’ Seminar on Writing: A Quest for Selfhood was held in the College premises on 07 September, 2010. 3rd year English Honours students from 7 colleges in the city participated in the seminar. Altogether, 14 papers were presented in the seminar. We are currently working on the possibility of publishing the seminar proceedings in a book form.
* Musings – departmental magazine wholly managed by the 2nd year Honours students.
* The Department also organised a special get-together for the 2nd & 3rd year Honours Students in Dec 2010. This gathering was a welcome break for both students and teachers after a long and hectic academic session.Achievements and Activities of Individual Faculty member:
