Mathematics Department
History of the Department
The Department of Mathematics had a humble beginning. The official strength of the department during its inception in 1937 was one. The Head of the Department was Prof. Sakti Ranjan Bhattacharjee. However, some Christian Brothers also lent a helping hand to the Department. Prof. Sakti Ranjan Bhattacharjee continued as Head of the Department till 1954. In 1953, Prof. Guru Prasad Gupta joined the Department. He took over as Head of the Department in 1954. Prof. Tarun Chandra Deba joined the Department in August 1957 and Prof. Prithish Dutta joined in June 1958. The strength of the Department increased with the induction of Prof. Gopinath Sarkar in March 1960, Prof Ashok Kumar Chakraborty in August 1960, Prof. Arun Kumar Biswas in May 1961, Prof. Dombeswar Nath in 1961 and Prof. Sisir Kumar Bhattacharjee joined in 1962. Prof. L. N. Tluanga joined in 1966 and Prof. Jayanta Lahiri joined in 1968. In 1975 Prof. Guru Prasad Gupta passed away and Prof Pritrish Dutta took over as Head of the Department. Mr. Sibnath Bose joined the Department in the year 1979. Prof. Jayanta Lahiri took over as Head in April 1994. Prof. Dipankar Deb joined in 1994, Prof. Kit Kupar Dympep joined in 1995 and Bro. A. Len Naronha joined in 1999. Miss Sonali Sengupta joined in 2001. Prof. Jibitesh Dutta joined the college in 2002. Dr.Sibnath took over as the head of the department in 2005. Prof. Manbhalang Chyne joined in February 2005 and Prof. Gregory Jala Kharbhih joined in May 2006. Prof. Jibitesh Dutta took lien leave joined NEHU in 2009. In his place Prof. J.Touthang joined the department in 2009. Prof. Sabari S. Dhar joined the Department of Commerce, St. Edmund’s College in the year 2009. She joined the Department of Mathematics in the year 2010.
