General Information:
This section offers information about St. Edmund's
College, Shillong, Meghalaya, India.
St. Edmund's College is affectionately known as
SEC. It is often erroneously known as St. Edmunds College, St. Edmund
College, St. Edmunds' College, etc. However, as any Edmundian, Ex-Edmundian
or Christian Brother around the world knows, the correct form is
St. Edmund's College!!! (Edmund
with apostrophe s). There are some people who abbreviate
it down to steds. This is acceptable.
SEC is located in Laitumkhrah area, Shillong, Meghalaya.
The main gate is on the South East side of the campus, located on
National Highway 40 just opposite to "Fish Dale" and Agriculture
Office of Meghalaya Govt., near Fire Brigade. The next important
landmark is Assam Auto Agency (Petrol Pump). The vast campus of
SEC stretches upto near Laitumkhrah Bazar in the North East side,
traverses towards the North West upto near the Shillong Main Cathedral.
In between, the Northern perimeter is dotted by important institutions
and landmarks such as Bethany Society, NCC Office, Mary Rice School,
Don Bosco Mini Stadium, etc. The South Western perimeter stretches
up to Assam House.
The main campus of SEC is shared by St. Edmund's
School, one of the premier schools in North East India. The school
occupies the South West section of the campus and has its own football
fields (two), cricket ground, basketball courts, volleyball court,
squash court, Chapel and Grotto, living quarters for the Christian
Brothers, etc. All these are besides the majestic school building,
one of the best in Shillong.
The administration of the school is totally autonomous
and detached from SEC.
All the College buildings of SEC were originally
"Assam-type" structures. All the original buildings, except
the Principal's office and the Counselling Hall (formerly the Library),
have been torn down and concrete buildings constructed in their
places. The main College buildings of SEC consist of a massive 4-block,
3-storied building that houses all the class room and laboratories,
auditorium, AV room, and staff rooms.
In front of the main College building is the Library
building. This building also houses the College canteen and Staff
Common Room. Next to that is the Principal's Office, including the
Office. The Boys' Common Room is also in this building. To the North
of the Principal's Office is the Cafeteria, with a sprawling lawn
and stands.
The Counselling Hall is located to the West of the
Principal's Office. The Girls' Common Room is attached to this building.
The Scholasticate building is behind the Library Building.
The College Campus is interspersed with beautiful
flower beds and green lawns, all well-maintained by an army of gardeners.
The Football Ground is located on the Northern part
of the Campus. It serves dually as a Cricket ground, and also has
a Basketball Court and Volleyball Court at the side. It now also
has a "Changing Room" facility, with bath rooms and a
steady supply of running water.
Bro. J. N. Foley's Residence, a hostel for boys,
is located below the Football Ground. It houses more than 30 boys,
and is well looked after by Prof. Gurung (HOD, Zoology Dept.).
The Juvenate building is next to Bro. J. N. Foley's
Residence.
Lastly, B. T. Hostel is located on the remote North
Western corner of the Campus, next to the Shillong Main Cathedral.
Its Superintendent is Prof. Sen (HOD, Biotechnology Dept.).
